When David and Lisa Alderson got tired of the heat in Lubbock, Texas, they used to retreat to their lake house near Austin. But when David, 59, retired from his auto dealership, the couple decided it was time for a new vacation home.

“The heat in central Texas is brutal in the summer, with 95% humidity,” said Lisa , 59. “At first we thought we’d buy a beach house, but then we realized we already have more than enough hot weather, and we started looking at Colorado.”
